I think CIMA fans will like this game, because not only is it similar in terms of gameplay, but it is also about as overlooked as CIMA was. You can probably find the DS version for about $10, but I got my copy used for $8. It's definitely the best eight-dollar game I've ever played.
The storyline is a bit cliche though. It's your typical alien outbreak sci-fi story about this newly discovered, highly adaptable life form called Scurge. The game reminded me of Metroid Fusion in the sense that Scurge infects and takes over the body or object of whatever it attacks. To investigate the Scurge outbreak, our heroine (I don't think the game ever says her name, but if it did I can't remember what it was) recieves a special suit that helps slow down the rate of infection, should she get attacked by Scurge.
The game is like CIMA because you travel through a series of dungeons while solving puzzles and fighting enemies, some of which constantly respawn. Though I get the feeling that the developers got a lot of ideas from Metroid too. Heck, there's even this one enemy that looks like a crude metroid rip-off, and acts like one as well. Scurge is a pretty darn fun game though, and in my opinion very challenging.
You see, not only are you focusing on your HP (which you can gain more of by killing lots of enemies and leveling up), but you also need to keep an eye on your infection level. It slowly increases from 1 to 100%, at which point your HP decrease rapidly. The trick is to quickly make it to the decontamination rooms scattered about the levels (there are usually a lot of them though).
The other trick is finding out how to efficiently defeat foes, because while some weapons might to heavy damage to one enemy, it might improve the stats of another.
It sounds tedious, but I love this game to death. Maybe it's just the sci-fi aspect or something, or maybe it's because the bosses are named after monsters from Greek mythology. I don't know, but if you can find this game for as cheap as I did, I'd definitely recommend it.
I'm going to assume that the GBA version is identical to the DS version, because I never have to use the touch screen for anything special, so either one will do.
Hah, and on another note, Scurge: Hive has one of the best Game Over sequences I've ever seen, and according to my brother it's different if you die at 100% infection rate.
